CONSUMER WARNING - Knowing what to expect and helpful Hints - Warning signs to look out for. Make sure you know what services the company includes in the price and what they charge extra for.

Professional cleaning prices should include: 1) Truckmounted Steam or Truckmounted Dry Cleaning 2) IICRC Certified Company
& Technicians 3) Preinspection of areas to be serviced 4) Pretreating of all areas, with special attention to soiled areas and spots
5) Cleaning solutions 6) Movement of most furniture, placed on plastic chips or foam blocks 7) Post inspection of areas serviced
8) Guarantee of 3 days or more, to redo services paid for at no extra charge.

The 2 Routine Services - (Both are extra services at extra cost) Scotchgard/Teflon protector and Microban disinfectant. Carpets should be cleaned and reprotected every 12 months or less. The Scotchgard/Teflon is striped off from everyday use, and it should be reapplied each cleaning "To take the carpets back to the same performance it left the Mill with." Microban (sanitized) should be done every other cleaning. Carpets exposed to small children, pets, or are over concrete or are below grade (basement) should be sanitized each cleaning.

The 2 Specialty Services - Freshen-All (pet accident/odor enzyme treatment) and MasterBlend Allergy Relief Treatment. Both are special services benefiting the customer, not the carpet. (Both are extra services at extra cost)

Industry standard - Combined areas and areas over 250 sq. ft. considered 2 or more areas. (Normally rooms cleaned the most, are those most lived in, and are the largest areas in the home. Family room, living room & Master bedroom, which are normally around 200 sq.ft. The average Area in the U.S. is approximately 125 sq.ft.)

THE INDUSTRY STANDARD regarding PRETREATING and SPOT CLEANING. Exactly as written in the standard - "Special treatment with preconditioning agents in heavily soiled entry and traffic areas should be included in the cost of normal cleaning. However, overall job cost may increase in extreme soiling situations." Spot treating is written similarly. Property maintained carpets should be cleaned and reprotected approximately every 12 months, varing with exposure and wear.

WARNING SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR - *Additional Services or *Services Available (*Heavily soiled areas require add'l services *Deep scrub *Traffic lane cleaning *Spot removal *Shampoo Formula 90) These are for pretreating and cleaner, and they normally charge 30 cents per sg.ft. for each service. YES, SOME CLEANERS CHARGE EXTRA FOR PRETREATMENT, SPOT CLEANING AND CLEANER, OTHERWISE THEY JUST USE WATER. Nearly all cleaners include cleaner in the price, and most include pretreatment as well. Pricing per sq.ft. is the main way some carpet cleaning companies take advantage of customers. The average person has no idea how to figure area/room square footage. They know this and employ 1 of 2 techniques, the seeming low sq.ft. rate 50 - 70 cents per sq.ft., or using Bait & Switch seemily lower area rates then charging an additional 30 cents per sq.ft. extra for soiled areas, spots, traffic areas... The Switch is they cannot clean without it. Here we mean the pretreater or the cleaner or both are not included.(Not to be confused with needing Microban disinfecting for health hazards, such as vomit, urine, blood, feces and mold Which are BIO HAZARDS to anyone in the cleaning area.)

Bait and Switch companies operate as follows. They come to your home to clean, they point out the dirty areas. Then figure out the square footage and begin multiplying. Looking at an invoice of Tri-State, they charged a customer to pretreat and another charge for chemical boost. Use 30 cents for deep scrub, and 30 cents for chemical boost. Treating 500 square foot with each treatment, thats 500 sq.ft., times 60 cents = $300.00 just to pretreatment and cleaner inaddition to the charge cleaning price.

Lets look closely at an ad from ChemDry by the Millers, currently running and ran for years in Clipper Magazine in Berks, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, Lancaster, and York Counties.

Coupon special; 5 Areas Cleaned for $139.99* In the coupon, each disclaimer begins with * followed by microscopic text. Starting in the middle of line 2 of the disclaimer "Prices may vary with the condition of carpet. Fuel surcharge may apply. Truckmount service available, additional charges apply."

Add to the $139.95, a fuel surcharge to show up, a pretreating charge with the condition of carpet, not to mention an extra charge to professionally clean your carpet(truck mount). Otherwise they will use a spin bonnet on your carpet with a floor spinner. This method spreads dirt and spots around without removing them. Picture a wet wash rag, then wiping your entire body head to toe. Would you be clean? You will dry faster than taking a shower. Spin Bonnet is OK for blending not cleaning. Their truck mounted service is similar to Thoroclean's truck mounted dry cleaning. If someone wants dry cleaning and we cannot service the customer, we recommend Chem-Dry by the Millers truck mounted for dry cleaning.

Now lets look at another competitor, and just perception. Stanley Steemer boasts +60 years in business, but began 1973. They took on the name Stanley Steemer, off the name Stanley Steamer the car, paddle boat, and locomotive. Back in 1972 the founder of Stanley Steemer, was running Jack Bates Carpet Cleaning out of their garage in Columbus Ohio, their gross annual sales in the mid $50,000 range. Stanley Steemer operations & rates vary largely. Since inception Stanley Steemer exceeds Industry Standards.

If for some reason we cannot service a customer, we recommend the Stanley Steemer for steam cleaning. How does Thoroclean compare? Our rates are usually 10% - 20% below that of Stanley Steemer, for better services. (See next paragraph) Thoroclean began in PA, on Feb. 14, 1956. While we are far older than Stanley Steemer, and while we provide the same services, how we are able to provide them separates us. They have changed little over the past 25 years, we continue to improve how the services are performed. Thoroclean offers 3 different cleaning methods; truck mounted steam cleaning, truck mounted dry cleaning, and truck mounted encapsulation cleaning. While most cleaners are limited to one cleaning method.

One example - nearly all professional carpet cleaners cannot apply Scotchgard during the cleaning process. This is because of the heat source and chemicals are ran through the heat exchangers. A homeowner can go to Walmart or Target, buy a Bissle cleaner and clean and Scotchgard their carpet at the same time. A service most professionals cannot do. They spray the Scotchgard on the wet carpet after cleaning. Where is the protector? On the surface. Thoroclean applies the Scotchgard while cleaning down the entire tuft, then does a second application on the carpet when complete.
